That's kind of what I was thinking for the trunkhose; they aren't a terribly complicated piece of attire. The pattern on 103 doesn't call for a codpiece, so I shall probably be experimenting with either leaving off the flap (and some of the other structural elements maybe) and letting the codpiece poke up from the lower layer, or putting the codpiece on the trunkhose and making a flap for the base layer. (I'd like to be able to use the hosen later without the fancy slashed-velvet outer layers, so I'm glad I made the codpiece for it anyway.)
Part of the confusion is that bride specified the codpiece was to be of the linen that matches the hosen rather than the velvet specified for the panes. (despite the photos in the book showing the opposite.) I suspect the bride's instructions were just a bit hastily written, but I'm following them to the extent I can make them work.
Ooh, pictures of alternate fastenings would be great! (Lack of explanations for how the fastenings work: another source of Opinions.) Maybe as a top-level post for later reference, too.
I've got used to tying drawstrings at wrists, so I think I'd be okay with ties, but I think I would definitely want some kind of reference on how to do them unobtrusively, because my default method would not be unobtrusive.
